What’s Included in SEO Services?
By Anthony Lumpkin, founder of TL Web Design
“SEO services” is one of the vaguest things a small business can buy. Two companies can quote the same name for completely different work, and it is hard to tell from the outside whether you are paying for real changes or a monthly report. This guide breaks SEO into the parts that actually move results, so you can see what is included in an offer and what is missing.
It is written for owners of local and small businesses, but most of it applies to any site.
1. An SEO audit
Good SEO starts with finding out what is wrong. An audit looks at the site, the competition and the searches that matter, and ends with a ranked list of fixes. A useful audit tells you:
- Which searches you show up for today, and which ones you should.
- Technical problems: speed, mobile layout, indexing, broken links, redirects, duplicate titles.
- Content gaps: services or towns with no page, and pages that try to rank for too much at once.
- Local signals: your Google Business Profile, directory listings and reviews.
- What the businesses outranking you do differently.
If an audit is just a long automated report with hundreds of “issues,” ask for the ten that matter most. A short ranked list is more useful than a long scary one.
2. On-page SEO
On-page SEO is about each page’s content and structure. It includes a clear topic per page, a title tag and main heading that match what people search, a meta description that earns the click, headings that organize the page, internal links between related pages, and copy that actually answers the question. For local businesses it also means naming the towns you serve on the pages where it matters.
3. Technical SEO
Technical SEO is the plumbing underneath. It is invisible to visitors and very visible to search engines:
- Fast loading, especially on phones.
- A mobile-friendly layout.
- An XML sitemap and a robots.txt that does not block important pages.
- Canonical tags so search engines know which version of a page is the real one.
- Clean redirects, especially after a redesign, with no chains or loops.
- Structured data (schema markup) that describes your business, services and FAQs.
- HTTPS everywhere and no broken internal links.
4. Local SEO
For a business that serves customers in a specific area, local SEO is often the most valuable part. It covers your Google Business Profile, consistent business details across directories, service-area pages, local schema markup and a steady flow of reviews. See local SEO for how TL Web Design approaches it.
5. Content
Search engines rank pages that answer questions well. Content work means writing or improving service pages, location pages, FAQs and helpful articles based on what your customers actually ask. It is slower than technical fixes, but it is what builds rankings that last. Quality matters far more than volume: one excellent page beats ten thin ones.
6. Links and mentions
Links from other reputable sites still help search engines judge trust. For a small business, the useful kind are earned locally: chambers of commerce, industry associations, local news, suppliers, sponsors and partners. Be wary of anyone selling bulk links; they can do more harm than good.
7. Measurement and reporting
You should be able to see what changed. Reasonable reporting uses Google Search Console (searches, clicks, indexing), your Google Business Profile insights (calls, direction requests, website clicks) and your own lead counts. A report that only lists rankings for a handful of hand-picked keywords tells you very little.
What is “SEO as a service”?
“SEO as a service” usually means an ongoing monthly arrangement: someone continuously works on your site and listings and reports back. It can be worth it for competitive businesses with lots of pages and the budget to keep publishing. For many small local businesses, a different model fits better: a thorough audit, a fixed-price round of fixes, SEO built properly into the website, and a check-in a few months later. That is the model TL Web Design uses.
What SEO services should not include
- Ranking guarantees. Nobody controls Google. A guarantee is a sales tactic.
- Secret methods. Good SEO is well documented. If someone will not explain what they are doing, be careful.
- Bulk links or fake reviews. Both break Google’s rules and can get a business penalized.
- Long contracts with no defined work. You should know what is being done each month.
How much time SEO takes from you
Whatever the provider does, some of the work has to come from you. Expect to spend a little time at the start answering questions about your services, your best customers and the towns you serve, and approving any new pages or profile changes. After that, the most valuable ongoing job is one only you can do: asking happy customers for reviews and sending real photos of your work.
A good provider makes that easy, with a review link you can text, a simple way to send photos, and changes that do not need a meeting. If an SEO arrangement needs hours of your time every month, or none at all, ask why. The best results usually come from a provider who does the technical work and an owner who keeps the profile and reviews alive.
Questions to ask an SEO provider
- What exactly will you change in the first month?
- Who makes changes to my website, and do I approve them?
- How will we measure results, and when should I expect to see them?
- Is there a contract term, and what happens to the work if I leave?
- Can you show me real clients and what you did for them?
