Why is your website loading slowly?

What Google measures, the usual causes of slow pages, and how to run a free test and turn the results into a short fix list.

What you’ll learn

  • What the three Core Web Vitals measure
  • How to run a PageSpeed Insights test
  • How to read the results without the jargon
  • The usual culprits, and who fixes them

Why it matters

People leave slow pages, and Google uses real-world speed on phones as one of the signals it ranks websites by.

What Google measures

Google’s Core Web Vitals look at three things: how fast the main content appears (LCP, under 2.5 seconds is good), how quickly the page responds to a tap (INP, under 200 milliseconds) and how much the layout jumps while loading (CLS, under 0.1).

Main content shows< 2.5 sLCP
Responds to a tap< 200 msINP
Layout stays put< 0.1CLS
